Poker is a family of card games which includes betting and also individual play and there are ways to play poker on your desktop and also via a poker app on your smartphone or tablet.

The winner of the poker game is determined by the ranks and combinations of their cards. Some of these cards remain hidden until the end of the game until the “reveal” where all cards from a player’s hand are on display.

Poker games can vary and are different in the number of cards that are dealt, the number of shared or “community” cards and the number of cards that remain hidden until the conclusion of the game (the reveal). Betting practices and wages drastically vary among different poker games in betting limits and the splitting of the pot between a high hand and a low hand.

In most modern poker games, the first round of betting begins with one of the players making some form of a forced bet which is commonly referred to as the blind and/or the ante. Each player bets according to the rank he believes his hand is worth as compared to the other players, this is typical in standard forms of poker.

The action then proceeds clockwise as each player in turn must either match the maximum previous bet or fold which eliminates them from the game and also means losing the amount bet so far and all further monetary interest in the hand. A player who chooses to match a bet may also do something called a “raise” which is an increase in the bet. Each betting round ends when all players have either matched the last bet or folded, thus being eliminated and ending the game/hand.

If all but one player folds on any round, the remaining player collects the pot. That particular play may choose to show or conceal his hand. If more than one player remains in contention after the final betting round then the hands are revealed and the player with the winning hand takes the pot. Money is usually only placed into the pot voluntarily, with the exception of initial forced bets, by a player who either believes the bet has positive expected value or who is trying to do what is called a “bluff” (a fake action) to fool other players for various strategic reasons. Strategy does play a role in the outcome of the game that is largely hinged on risk. There is a psychology to playing poker that has been individualized and practiced during the booming growth in popularity of poker.
